CNC Machining Tolerances
Protocase offers varying levels of CNC machining precision depending on your design requirements. We can manufacture and validate both coordinate tolerances and geometric tolerances (GD&T).
Our standard precision, premium precision and ultra precision tolerances are described in the table below using coordinate tolerances. Equivalent effective tolerances using GD&T can also be achieved and validated; however, the magnitude of the tolerance may change depending on part geometry.
Using thinner sheet metal in CNC machining may require CNC jigs, which can add cost to your design build. Talk to your account manager to discuss your requirements, they will confer with our engineering and design services team about your options.
The table below outlines the tolerance level associated with each level of precision.
X is the Tolerance, where conventional dimensioning and tolerancing would be displayed as Nominal Dimension ± X
| Standard Precision | Premium Precision | Ultra Precision |
|---|---|---|
| X ≥ ±0.005”(0.13mm) | ±0.005”(0.13mm) > X > ±0.001”(0.025mm) | ±0.001”(0.025mm) ≥ X ≥ ±0.0001”(0.0025mm) |
| CNC Process | Tolerance |
|---|---|
| Router | ± 0.005" | 0.13mm |
| Router (Cutting Gaskets) | ± 0.030" | 0.762mm |
| Engraving | ± 0.005" | 0.13mm |
| Surface Roughness (Finish) | 125RA |
