CNC Turning Work Holding & Work Envelope
The length constraint for CNC turning is proportional to the diameter of the turned part. There are a number of factors that go into determining this.
How to Find the Maximum Length Possible:
- • The diameters possible for CNC turned parts range from 0.230” (5.842mm) to 4” (101.6mm).
- • Length proportions will vary, based on the diameter you require.
- • Choose the appropriate range in the Diameter Range column that matches your part diameter.
- • Multiply your part diameter (D) by the corresponding value in the column labelled L/D #1 (No Tailstock). The resulting value is your maximum part length.
- • Should you require a greater length, multiply your diameter by the value in the column labelled L/D #2 (With Tailstock). The resulting value is the absolute maximum part length. In order to achieve this part length, a tail stock will be used. In order to hold the tailstock, a small dimple or a through-hole with a countersink will be required.
Maximum length for a CNC turned part = 16” (406.4mm)*.

*Internal features, such as bores, will reduce the max total length of part achievable. Simply subtract the maximum bore depth on your part from 16” to calculate your max part length. (Example, if a part has a 4” deep bore, its max length is 12”).
